Oxygen Concentrators

Oxygen concentrators have become one of the most widely used sources of medical oxygen. These devices pull in surrounding air, filter out nitrogen, and deliver oxygen-rich air to the user. Home oxygen concentrators typically provide up to 5 litres per minute, which is suitable for many people requiring continuous oxygen therapy. Larger units can reach 10 litres per minute for higher-flow requirements.

Portable oxygen concentrators have brought significant independence to users. Many models weigh less than 3 kilograms and run on rechargeable batteries. They supply oxygen in pulses rather than continuous flow, making them ideal for movement, shopping trips, or travel. 

 

Oxygen Cylinders

Oxygen cylinders contain compressed oxygen and come in a range of sizes to meet different needs. Small cylinders, often around 2 to 5 litres, offer convenience for short outings or emergencies. Larger cylinders, such as 10 or 14 litre options, provide extended use at home.

 

One advantage of oxygen cylinders is that they deliver oxygen at both continuous and pulse settings, depending on the regulator. They require refilling or replacement once empty, which means users must have a reliable supply service. 

 

Liquid Oxygen Systems

Liquid oxygen systems offer another solution, especially for people who require high levels of oxygen throughout the day. Oxygen becomes liquid at extremely low temperatures, which means larger amounts can be stored in a smaller container. Liquid oxygen equipment usually involves a stationary tank kept at home and a lightweight portable unit that users fill themselves.

Because liquid oxygen evaporates over time, it must be used regularly. For people who rely on higher flow rates or spend time outdoors, the portability and longer duration of liquid oxygen make it one of the most efficient options. Research has shown that mobility improves dramatically for users who switch from heavy cylinders to lightweight liquid systems.

 

Oxygen Masks and Nasal Cannulas

Delivery devices are just as important as the oxygen source. Nasal cannulas are the most common, partly because they are comfortable and easy to wear for long periods. They are designed for low to moderate flow rates. Oxygen masks, on the other hand, provide a more controlled delivery and are often used in hospital settings when higher flow rates are needed. 

Simple masks, non-rebreather masks, and Venturi masks all serve different purposes, with the Venturi mask offering particularly precise oxygen concentration control.

 

CPAP and BiPAP Machines

Although best known for treating sleep apnoea, CPAP and BiPAP machines also support respiratory conditions that affect breathing patterns. CPAP provides continuous pressure to keep airways open, while BiPAP delivers separate pressure levels for inhaling and exhaling.
