Seeing your beloved dog or cat struggle to breathe can be a deeply frightening experience. As a critical component of veterinary care, oxygen support plays a central role in helping pets who cannot get enough oxygen on their own. This supportive therapy helps restore normal oxygen levels in the blood, lessens respiratory effort, and buys precious time for veterinarians to diagnose and treat the underlying condition. 

One of the most common reasons pets receive oxygen therapy is respiratory disease. Conditions such as pneumonia, chronic bronchitis or asthma can inflame the airways and lungs, making it hard for animals to draw in enough air. Pneumonia, an infection or irritation of the deep lung tissues, is particularly serious in cats and dogs because it reduces the lungs’ capacity to exchange oxygen effectively. In such cases, supplemental oxygen can help improve blood oxygen levels while antibiotics and other treatments combat the infection. 

Certain breeds are more susceptible to breathing difficulties because of their anatomy. Brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persian cats have shortened skulls and narrowed airways that can collapse or obstruct, especially in stressful conditions or hot weather. This “brachycephalic airway syndrome” can lead to rapid, laboured breathing and dangerously low oxygen levels, making timely oxygen support crucial. 

Heart conditions also play a major role in the need for oxygen therapy. Diseases such as congestive heart failure or hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in cats hinder the heart’s ability to pump efficiently. When this happens, fluid can build up in the lungs (pulmonary oedema), interfering with normal gas exchange and leaving organs starved of oxygen. Oxygen support helps alleviate this strain while cardiology treatments are administered. 

Pets who have experienced trauma or shock also often require immediate oxygen. Accidents, falls, burns, smoke inhalation, and severe wounds can disrupt normal breathing and circulation. Oxygen therapy stabilises these animals while vets assess and manage injuries. In emergency settings, oxygen may be the first intervention as blood oxygen saturation is measured and treatment plans are crafted. 

Other causes of respiratory distress in pets include tracheal collapse, a condition most often seen in small-breed dogs where the windpipe weakens and partially collapses, making breathing difficult. Pets with anaemia may also show symptoms that mimic respiratory disease, because their blood carries less oxygen to tissues, prompting rapid breathing as the body tries to compensate. A veterinary team will often use pulse oximetry or blood gas analysis to determine whether a pet truly needs oxygen support. 

Oxygen therapy may also be administered during and after surgery when pets are under anaesthesia, as anaesthetic agents can slow respiration. Some clinics offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a more advanced treatment that increases oxygen delivery to tissues to aid healing in cases of severe injury, infection or tissue damage. 

Knowing the signs that your pet may need oxygen support is vital. Look for rapid or open-mouth breathing, blue or pale gums, excessive fatigue, and difficulty walking or responding to commands. If you observe these symptoms, contacting your veterinarian immediately can make a life-saving difference.
